Summer Pest Control: 3 Tips to Keep the Bugs Away This Summer

Summertime is here and so are the summer critters (BC has a lot of them). But don’t be too concerned, we have some summer pest control tips for you! And once you know WHO you’re looking for, the next step is taking some preventative measures to keep them out of your way!

Summer Pest Control Tip #1 Take Away Their Entry Points

Summer pest control tip number one is always to start with inside your home. Because if you can stop them from getting inside, you have won the hardest battle. Start by checking all your entry and exit points focusing on screens that need to be replaced, cracks in sealant or worn-out weather stripping. Then move on to the outside, check the outside of your home for any cracks, damage or small holes that could be a possible entry point for pests.

Summer Pest Control Tip #2  Eliminate all Standing Water

The next step to take to keep summer pests away is to eliminate any standing water you may have in your yard. Standing water can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests alike. You can start by closely surveying your property and identifying any water collection points. These can be anything from birdbaths, patio furniture that hasn’t been dried out, sports equipment, toys and anything that could hold water. Emptying these regularly or bringing them inside after use can help reduce the mosquitoes in your backyard.

If you notice water tends to collect in certain parts of your yard without cause, you may have a larger issue with water drainage and should consider consulting a lawn maintenance professional.

Summer Pest Control Tip #3 Maintain Your Yard

The final summer pest control tip is maintaining your yard! And while this seems like a logical step, it can always be the most difficult to execute regularly. Grass, if possible should be cut every 2-3 weeks and bushes and trees should get regular trims throughout the spring and summer to help keep these areas from becoming home to a host of new critters.

There are also a few plants that can help reduce the instances of critters (specifically mosquitoes) like lavender, catnip and basil.
