It’s that time of year, we’ve done a round-up of our TOP 3 Summer Pests that we, as pest control experts, see calls for, that way you know what to look for! We’re also sharing our tips on how to prevent these critters from ruining a perfect summer’s day!

Summer Pests #1 WASPS

If the wasps on your property are a nuisance, your first step is finding their nest and evaluating the situation, is the location reachable? How big is it? Are there many or just a few wasps coming and going? (note this isn’t an indicator of what could be inside). Wasps can have their nests in gardens, trees, undercrofts, and even in the ground, so look high and low.

No matter the situation when it comes to wasps, suiting up in protective gear is a priority. Ensure to cover as much surface area on your body as possible. Wearing a netted hat, long sleeves, gloves, and goggles, and tucking your pants into your socks is recommended. If a netted hat is not available, cover your hair and face with a handkerchief.

Trying natural remedies is also possible, peppermint or a soap mixture can be helpful. Peppermint oil can also be used to deter wasps from your garden.

However, professional pest control services may be your best option for wasp nest removal. Tackling a wasp nest on your own is possible. However, there is a great risk of being stung. Although being stung by a single wasp is typically not dangerous, being stung by many could result in serious harm. If you are allergic, even a single sting could be detrimental.

Summer Pests #2 ANTS

If you spot ants in your garden don’t fret, it’s not all bad news! Ants can help improve your soil quality, serve as pollinators, and eat the eggs and larvae of other garden pests. However, if you become overwhelmed by the volume of ants and other pests around your home, it may be time to take some action. And we have some tips to do just that.

If you can find and identify the ant nest your solution could be as simple as hot water. Simply scrape away the top layer of the nest and pour boiling water down the entry point. If there is still activity after several days, repeat the process.

You can also use aromatic herbs as a naturel deterrent (this may help with other pests like mosquitos aswell). Growing mint, fennel and basil in your garden can go a long way!

Though if you find you have an overwhelming amount of ants, it is time to call for pest control in Vancouver. Through affordable, environmentally friendly treatment, our professional exterminators will help you eliminate ants and other insects that pose a risk to your garden.

Summer Pests #3 Rodents

And the final category that we see most in the summer is rodent calls. Specifically mice, rats and squirrels.

These pests are unwelcome guests in any home and there are some great steps you can take to deter them. And remember, rodents are searching for 3 things: Somewhere to eat, something to make their bed with, and somewhere to sleep

Start by sealing any cracks, holes and gaps from the inside out. Remember rodents can squeeze through holes smaller than themselves so it’s important to be diligent in your checks. The easiest way is to start with doors and windows, making sure everything is sealed, and moving outward from there.

The next step is making sure your food, and garbage is stored in a tightly-closed container.. Ensure mice won’t find soft nesting materials by storing all fabric, rugs, and blankets in heavy-duty plastic storage bins. Remember that mice will also chew up cardboard, paper, or lightweight plastic to make nests, so it’s wise to dispose of your household’s recycling quickly.

And if you find yourself overwhelmed, consider calling in an expert.
