Fall Rodent Round Up

Are you ready for the FALL RODENT ROUND-UP?

Get to know the pesky critters that like to get cozy in your home as the days grow shorter. Check out our RODENT Prevention Post for more tips and tricks, or give us a call!

Rodent Round Up: Rats

There are two types of rats in BC: the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the roof rat (Rattus rattus). Rats are not native to BC and were introduced via boat traffic in the mid-1800s. They tend to thrive only in urban areas where food is abundant or where winters are mild.” Wild Safe BC

Rats can be detrimental to both your home and your health! They can easily chew through metal or plastic pipes, wooden beams, joists, and sometimes even concrete. Not only that, but they can cause electric issues (even starting fires) by chewing through cords or electric wiring in your walls.

Rats require food, water and shelter; by taking away easy access to these things, you help minimize the chances they’ll enter your home. Ensure you properly store all food, limit water sources, and patch any holes and entry points for these critters (no matter how small).

Rodent Round Up: Mice

“House mice are the most common species to find inside your home because they’re adaptable to human presence. They readily eat food scraps, build their nests in walls or dark attics and basements, and spend most of their time hidden from view.” Bird Watching HQ

Mice, like rats, require shelter, food and water to survive. They can cause damage to your home through gnawing, nest building and defecation. They can cause serious health issues for your family and pets as they can easily carry diseases.

To help prevent these critters from entering the same process as rats, ensure you properly store all food, limit water sources, and patch any holes and entry points for these critters (no matter how small).

Rodent Round Up: Squirrels

“Grey squirrels are the most common squirrel in BC’s biggest cities. Grey squirrels are larger than native squirrels, can be grey or black and have large, fluffy tails longer than their bodies. These squirrels thrive in urban environments.” BC SPCA

Alongside grey squirrels, BC also sees: red squirrels, Douglas Squirrels and Northern flying squirrels.

Squirrels can look for food, shelter and water in your home; they cause issues by (much like rats and mice) gnawing on electrical wires, shredding insolation and can be dangerous (as many wild animals are).
