Signs of a Silverfish Infestation

Vancouver has a growing silverfish problem. Because of the city’s mild, rainy climate, the area is perfect for silverfish to thrive. They love moisture and warm temperatures, and more homeowners are reporting silverfish infestations; even more have no idea they are affected by this growing menace.

What are Silverfish?
As one of the oldest insects in the world, dating back 350 to 400 million years ago, silverfish have been around for very long. Known as paramites, carpet sharks and fishmoths, these tiny insects make a fish-like wriggling motion as they move. They are silvery-blue, hence their name, and surprisingly fast crawlers. They feed on a variety of materials, including:

  • Sugar
  • Starch and cellulose
  • Glue
  • Coffee
  • Carpet
  • Clothing
  • Hair
  • Book bindings
  • Mold
  • Photographs
  • Paper
  • Favourite food? Oats!

Because they have such a diverse appetite, they are hard to remove from the home. If you suspect a silverfish infestation, you may want to call in an exterminator that specializes in these types of bugs.

Signs of Silverfish Infestation
Silverfish prefer dark, moist places. They are often found in wall voids, basements, attics, bookshelves, storage rooms, sinks and bathtubs. You may find signs of infestation by noticing holes in wallpaper, clothing or even damage to books you have in storage. North Vancouver in particular is more commonly known for silverfish infestations but it’s not just limited there. These pesky insects will find their way into your home if you allow the conditions to be just right.

How to Prevent Silverfish
Pest prevention is key when it comes to silverfish. They often enter a home when infected materials are brought inside. It is best to inspect all cartons, boxes and furniture before bringing it into the house. Also, use simple pest control methods like sealing windows, cracks and holes so they cannot enter from the outside. Lowering the humidity in your home can help too, since silverfish prefer high humidity and warmth. You can make your home an unsuitable ground for breeding; thus helping to avoid an infestation.

If you have noticed signs of silverfish in your home, contact an exterminator at Pest Detective right away. We can help eradicate your silverfish problem as well as defend your home from other types of pests. Contact us today for a silverfish inspection.
