Do You know the Signs of a Rodent Infestation?
The first step is to know your enemy, the second is identifying the signs, and the third is rodent solutions, and this month we have you covered with all three steps!
Start with an inspection of your home (or bring in the professionals for a thorough look)
A great inspection (done by you or a Pest Control Expert) will have answers to the following:
- What are you dealing with, i.e. what kind of rodent (or other pests) is it?
- The severity of the problem
- Where they eat, travel, and nest
- Why they are attracted to your home or business? Whether it’s poor sanitation, available food, or water.
- And the best type of rodent control and where to place it for the highest chance of success.
KEY Identifiers of a Rodent infestation
- Droppings or strong urine odour or stains. Keep an eye out for ANY droppings in your home and any strange water stains unexplained by other causes ( leaky pipes, for example)
- Gnawed holes or gnaw marks in drywall, wood or any surfaces.
- Rodent Nests (see picture for example)
- Scampering noises
- Or any unusual pet behaviour.
We are going to talk about solutions in our next post HERE, but if you have a pest problem to avoid long-term deficits, it can be best to call in an expert.
Hundreds of different types of pests can enter your home, each with its own habits and characteristics. By arranging for a professional pest control inspection, you can treat and maintain your home as well as be successful at keeping it pest-free for years. Calling a pest control company as soon as you suspect you have a pest problem is best.
More Local Expertise: Signs of Infestation in Your Area
Vancouver: Urban Density & Old Homes
In Vancouver’s densely-packed neighborhoods—especially where older homes meet new construction—rodents often exploit tiny gaps in foundations, basements, or utility lines. Watch for droppings behind kitchen appliances, gnawed wood in storage sheds, and musty odours in heritage home crawlspaces. Ongoing construction and alleyway food waste increase the risk of new “rodent infestation Vancouver” cases every fall and winter.
North Vancouver: Forest Edge & Damp Spaces
The forested edges and frequent rain of North Vancouver make homes particularly appealing to rodents seeking dry shelter. Attics, crawlspaces, and unused sheds are common hotspots. Inspect for chewed insulation, burrows near gardens, and scampering noises after a storm. Seasonal moisture can also drive rodents to invade basements or garages.
Richmond: Waterways & Farmland
Richmond’s network of rivers, ditches, and farmland draws not just rats and mice, but occasionally voles and other field pests. Search for gnaw marks around outbuildings, droppings in barns, and tunneling in gardens or along dikes. Barns and waterfront properties are especially at risk during wet seasons or after nearby fields are harvested.
Burnaby: High-Rise Living & Greenbelts
Burnaby’s mix of modern high-rises and older houses offers rodents many entry points. Apartment residents may find evidence of mice or rats on balconies, in shared laundry rooms, or in storage lockers. Homes near parks should check around sheds, garbage bins, and along fences for tracks, droppings, or newly dug burrows.
Surrey: Suburban Spread & New Construction
In rapidly developing Surrey, construction can force rodents into homes old and new. Look for chew marks on garage doors, droppings in attics, and disturbed insulation in crawlspaces. Garden bird feeders, outdoor pet food, and easily accessible garbage all act as magnets for suburban rodents in search of food and warmth.
