Pet-Friendly Tips To Keep Rodents Out Of Your Garage This Winter

Winter is on its way, which means that it’s time to move all of your vehicles out of the garage and make room for snowbirds. Pest Detective advises you to ensure your garage is rodent-proof before moving anything in; otherwise, this winter could start on a wrong note with some uninvited guests.

Here are nine tips to help you protect your garage from pests this winter:

  1. Clean up any food sources that may be left out in or around your garage. This includes birdseed and pet food.
  2. Make sure all windows and doors leading into and out of your garage are shut tightly. Pests can easily squeeze through gaps that are 1/4 inch wide.
  3. If you have any holes in or around your garage, fix them up to prevent pests from entering and causing problems. Rats and mice love to live in nooks and crannies where they will not be disturbed.
  4. Remember that rodents and other pests can climb rough, textured surfaces much easier than they can scramble up smooth surfaces. This is why Pest Detective wants you to remove air vents and wire mesh screens from your garage if possible.
  5. It is a good idea to secure your power cords as much as possible. Pests and small animals love to chew on anything that gives them access to food or shelter, so taking even the smallest precaution could go a long way in avoiding an infestation.
  6. Cover any open holes leading into your garages, such as pipes with wire mesh and sealed caps, for easy removal. Pests can squeeze through holes as small as 1/4 inch.
  7. Store any firewood as far as possible from your garage, preferably in a shed or other outbuilding, to keep rodents away from potential food sources and shelter.
  8. It would be best to cover garbage cans with tight-fitting lids to avoid odours and food sources. Pests will stop at nothing to get a meal, so Pest Detective advises you to remove any smelly foods from your garage.
  9. Even though these steps may seem like a hassle, they are well worth it in the long run to avoid any rodent problems. We wants you to enjoy a pest-free winter and urges you to do all that is necessary to maintain this peace of mind.
