How to repair termite damage

There is a popular misconception that termites are wood-eating insects only found in the tropics, but they are also common throughout Canada. Although termites mainly consume wood, they can feed on anything containing cellulose, including plants, books, boxes, carpets, insulation, and drywall.

Termite colonies can grow to contain up to 2 million members, and an infestation can leave property owners with hundreds or even thousands of dollars in damage. So early treatment is key. The earlier the infestation is detected, the easier it is to correct the problem and the cheaper it will be.

How to detect a termite infestation

There are tell-tale signs that the unwanted guests are present. Long discoloured streaks on the walls or the ground may be the first. These streaks are called shelter tubes and are used by the termites to move from one place to another. Wood that sounds hollow when knocked is another sign that the pesky strangers are wreaking havoc. Deteriorating wooden window frames, door jams, and furniture may also be visible. But often, the biggest clues are piles of bead-like residue (so tiny they appear to be dust) that accumulate near wooden structures.

Exterminate termites before making repairs

Before repairs, property owners should do a comprehensive check for any damage consistent with a termite infestation. Professional exterminators like the experts at Pest Detective should be engaged. They will ensure a detailed assessment and effective treatment to prevent a recurrence.

Using wood hardeners and fillers

Wood hardeners may be used to repair minimal damage caused by termites. Where the damage is a little more extensive, wood fillers may do the trick. Wood sealants may also be applied to cut off the oxygen supply for any remaining termites that may have hidden during the extermination process.

Supporting damaged structures

Termite damage can threaten the integrity of wooden structures. In some cases, adding support like wooden beams to the damaged sections may be advised. In other cases, replacing the entire infrastructure may be inevitable. The reality is that termites will chew into the wood for weeks, months and even years before they move on to their next wrecking job. Months of deterioration could leave a structure irreparable even after the termites have been exterminated. Replacing damaged structures will ensure safety and restore the aesthetics.

Remove potential host sites

Termite repair can be costly. Therefore, it would be wise to remove all untreated wood close to the affected home to prevent reinfestation. Areas such as log piles are potential sites for termites to build a colony that can attack a home after remedial work has been done.
