Have you ever seen an eight-legged creature scurry across the floor and wondered if it was a spider? If so, you may have a spider infestation on your hands. Luckily, we’ve put together some of the most common signs that spiders live in your home and what to do about them!
The most common sign that you have a spider infestation is the presence of webbing throughout your home. Webs are typically found in corners and can be easily removed with a broom or vacuum cleaner, although they may reappear after time. Of course, this isn’t always bad – spiders eat bugs! However, if there’s an unusual amount of webs built around windows or doors, it could indicate that some pests (like roaches) might also enjoy the warmth inside your house. In this case, keeping up with regular pest control will keep both insects and arachnids at bay!
Another common sign of a spider infestation (or any kind of bug infestation) is the presence of bugs near entryways like windows and doors. If you’ve found insects congregating at your front door or in your bedroom, it may be time to reconsider how often you use pesticides outside and inside.
If spiders seem to appear everywhere but nowhere specific, they might be living somewhere high up, such as the walls or ceiling. On the other hand, spiders typically build homes in dark places. If you cannot identify the source of the infestation, this could mean that they’re living in a hard-to-reach part of your house, and professional help might be beneficial here.
So you think that spiders are taking over your home? There’s no need to fear! Instead, here are some tips on how to deal with a spider infestation.
Most spiders that make their way into homes are harmless to humans. They even feed on pests, such as mosquitos and cockroaches, that may transmit diseases. However, the spider is still an unwelcome house guest that instills fear in many.
If you want to keep spiders out of your home, here are some things you can do:
Spiders gravitate towards dark, hidden spots. One of the first things you should do to rid your home of spiders is to keep your rooms free of clutter. You should neatly store books, clothes, toys, and anything else that can create a messy pile. Spiders are also less likely to invade your home if you vacuum regularly.
After you’ve cleared the piles inside your home, you should do the same around the outside of your house. Clean up piles of leaves and debris that may be lying around the perimeter of your home. Do not forget to trim overgrown trees, cut your lawn regularly, clear out weed patches and move your wood stacks further away from your house.
Destroy any spider webs you see in and around your home. If you keep doing this, the spiders will think it is unsafe and will likely find somewhere new to make their home. You must, however, be careful not to go overboard with clearing all the webs in your yard. If there is nowhere for the spiders to go, they might stay put. It is okay to have spiders outside once there is a clear separation between where they’ve made their home and your house.
Spiders and other bugs hang around lights because of their warmth. So, keep your outdoor lighting to a minimum, especially near your entryways. The fewer lights you leave on outside, the fewer spiders you will see in your home.
Some home remedies can deter spiders without the harmful effects of pesticides. One of the most effective home remedies is a mixture of vinegar, water and peppermint oil. First, you’ll need half a cup of vinegar mixed with a cup and a half of water. Add 20 drops of peppermint and pour the solution into a spray bottle. If you do not have peppermint oil, you can use eucalyptus as a substitute. Then, spray the mixture in entranceways and any other spots you’ve seen spiders.
If you have tried the abovementioned tips and still have an alarming number of spiders in your home, you should call a spider exterminator for help. A spider infestation may indicate another bug infestation as well since spiders cannot survive without a food supply. A spider exterminator can help you get rid of the spiders and any other bugs that may have taken over your space.
