Maple Ridge sits between active farmland, the Fraser River, and some of the fastest growing residential development in Metro Vancouver. That combination creates ideal conditions for rats and mice to thrive, and homeowners across the area are seeing more rodent activity every year.

Whether you are in the Albion Flats, along Kanaka Creek, or in one of the newer subdivisions near 232nd Street, rodents are drawn to the same things: food, water, and shelter. Here is why Maple Ridge is particularly vulnerable and what you can do about it.

Why Rodents Are So Common in Maple Ridge

Maple Ridge’s geography works in favour of rodents. The Fraser River and Kanaka Creek provide constant water sources and natural travel corridors that rats follow from agricultural land directly into residential neighbourhoods. Farms along Dewdney Trunk Road and the 256th Street corridor store feed and grain that attract large rodent populations, and those populations don’t stay on the farm.

New housing developments are also pushing rodents into existing homes. When land is cleared for construction, rats and mice that were living in the brush are displaced into surrounding properties. If your home is near an active development site, you are more likely to see rodent activity.

On top of that, BC’s mild winters mean rodents stay active year round. Unlike colder parts of Canada where deep freezes reduce populations, Maple Ridge’s climate allows rats and mice to breed through every season.

Signs You Have a Rodent Problem

Most homeowners don’t see the actual rodent first. They notice the evidence:

  • Droppings along baseboards, in garages, under sinks, or in crawlspaces
  • Gnaw marks on wiring, insulation, wood framing, or food packaging
  • Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls, ceilings, or attics especially at night
  • Nesting material like shredded paper, fabric, or insulation tucked into hidden corners
  • Grease marks or rub lines along walls where rodents travel the same path repeatedly

If you are finding droppings in multiple areas of your home, you likely have more than one rodent. Mice can fit through a gap the size of a dime, and rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter, so even well maintained homes are vulnerable.

How to Rodent Proof Your Maple Ridge Home

Prevention starts with making your home less attractive and harder to enter:

Seal entry points. Walk your foundation and look for gaps larger than a quarter inch around pipes, vents, utility lines, and where the siding meets the foundation. Steel wool and caulking work for small gaps. Larger openings may need metal flashing or hardware cloth.

Secure food sources. Store garbage in bins with tight fitting lids. Keep compost bins sealed. If you have fruit trees, pick up fallen fruit regularly. Bird feeders near the home are one of the most common attractants, especially in areas near Pitt Meadows and the Maple Ridge dykes where wildlife is abundant.

Reduce shelter. Trim vegetation and tree branches back from exterior walls. Move firewood piles away from the house. Clear clutter from garages, sheds, and crawlspaces where rodents like to nest.

Address moisture. Fix leaky outdoor taps, ensure gutters drain away from the foundation, and make sure crawlspaces are dry and ventilated. Rodents need water daily and are drawn to properties with easy access to it.

Common Rodents in Maple Ridge

Norway Rats (Brown Rats) are the most common in Maple Ridge. They are ground dwellers that burrow under foundations, along fences, and beneath sheds. They are strong swimmers, which is why properties near the Fraser River and Kanaka Creek see higher activity. Norway rats are aggressive and can chew through wood, plastic, and even soft metals.

Roof Rats (Black Rats) are climbers. They access homes through roof vents, gaps in soffits, and overhanging tree branches. Homes in treed areas of Maple Ridge, particularly along the slopes toward Golden Ears, are more susceptible to roof rat activity.

House Mice are smaller but reproduce faster. A single female can produce up to 10 litters per year. Mice are often the first rodent to enter a home because they can squeeze through incredibly small openings. Once inside, populations grow quickly.

If you are noticing rodent activity and want to understand more about the species in your area, our Master Mouse Post covers identification, behaviour, and the health risks associated with mice and rats in BC.

When to Call a Professional Exterminator

DIY traps can work for a single mouse. But if you are seeing ongoing signs of activity, droppings in multiple locations, or hearing sounds in your walls, the problem is beyond what store bought traps can solve. Rodents breed quickly, and a small issue can become a full infestation within weeks.

Professional rodent control starts with a thorough inspection to identify entry points, nesting areas, and the species involved. From there, a combination of trapping, exclusion, and monitoring keeps your home protected long term.

Our Maple Ridge pest control team knows exactly where rodents enter homes in this area. We have been servicing Maple Ridge properties for years and understand the specific pressure that comes from living near farmland and waterways. Our rodent control program includes three visits with inspection, trapping, and exclusion recommendations to stop the problem at the source.

Rodent Problems Don’t Stop at Maple Ridge

Rodent activity across the Fraser Valley is increasing. Homeowners in neighbouring communities are dealing with the same pressures from development, agriculture, and BC’s mild climate. If you are in the Tri-Cities area, our pest control Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody team handles rodent calls across the entire Tri-Cities region. And for properties east of Maple Ridge, our Fraser Valley pest control branch covers Mission, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and surrounding areas.

The earlier you address a rodent issue, the easier and less expensive it is to resolve. Once rodents establish nesting sites inside your walls or attic, removal becomes more involved and the risk of property damage increases.

Protect Your Home Before Rodent Season

Spring is when rodent activity spikes as breeding populations expand and new litters begin foraging. If you saw any signs of rodent activity over the winter, now is the time to act.

A perimeter pest treatment combined with rodent exclusion gives your home the strongest protection heading into spring and summer.
